Sideways walking

Slow, controlled steps sideways — builds the hip strength that helps prevent falls.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet together and knees slightly bent.
  2. Step sideways in a slow and controlled way, moving one foot to the side first.
  3. Move the other foot to join it.
  4. Avoid dropping your hips as you step. The NHS suggests 10 steps each way.

  • Stay tall and look ahead.

Take smaller steps beside a kitchen worktop for support.

Make it harder

Add a mini band above the knees (see banded side step).
