Original diagram — start and finish positions.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet wider than your hips, toes turned out about 30–45 degrees.
  2. Hold your hands together at your chest, or let a dumbbell hang between your legs.
  3. Bend your knees outwards over your toes and lower your hips straight down.
  4. Keep your chest up and back long.
  5. Press through your heels to stand, squeezing your glutes at the top.

Form tips

  • Knees follow the direction of your toes.
  • Think "down" rather than "back".

Common mistakes

  • Toes pointing forward while knees go out (strains the knees).
  • Leaning forward from the waist.
