Skipping ropes

Cheap, portable cardio — pick the right rope and length.

Types

  • Beaded or PVC ropes — slower and easier to time, good for learning.
  • Speed (cable) ropes — light and fast once you have the rhythm.
  • Weighted ropes — heavier, slower turns that work the arms and shoulders.

Length

Stand on the middle of the rope; the handles should reach about your armpits. Adjustable ropes make this easy.

Where to skip

A forgiving surface such as a wooden floor or a mat is kinder than concrete. You'll need plenty of ceiling height and clear space. Skipping is high impact — see our skipping page for low-impact alternatives.
